The main character is a boy evacuated from London to a remote and unique area on the Kent coast. His stay there is soon enlivened by a meeting with a gang of local children, and then with a group of smugglers led by the owner of Stone Castle. The action gathers pace when a body is found on the beach by the children, and a newspaper reporter arrives from London - leading the Gang of children to decide upon investigating the death, and the smuggling that was its cause. When the reporter is abducted, the children are left with the problem of finding her and bringing about her release from imprisonment in the castle. In the end the children are made prisoners themselves, and it is only with the involvement of soldiers from the local barracks that their release is obtained, and the smuggler gang brought to justice. This is the story of growing up in a different, freer age. Like Famous 5 adventures it leaves children to fend mainly for themselves, without too much involvement from adults - causing them to find solutions to problems themselves. The area where the narrator, Alan, is evacuated is a large part of the story: its remoteness, bleak landscape and character pervades the adventure. If you are looking for a child-centred adventure story of the vintage kind this is for you. Age range: probably 12 - 15 years.
